Despite the viral fascination with Winona Ryder’s animated reactions, David Harbour’s SAG Awards acceptance speech for Stranger Things demanded attention with the vow to “shelter freaks and outcasts.”

On Thursday, the actor addressed his choice of words in an Instagram post.

“In this upside down world where we’re supposed to believe what’s in people’s hearts as opposed to what they actually say, I’m proud to say that you can believe what I say, not what you can never know, the intention in my heart,” he wrote. “Thoughtful words in context still matter. Words about our responsibilities as human beings and as artists. Language is what elevates us above mere animals. Special thanks to our incredible crew, the unsung heroes of ‘stranger things.'”

The Screen Actors Guild awarded Stranger Things Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series at Sunday’s ceremony. While surrounded by his fellow cast members, Harbour said, “We are united, in that we are all human beings and we are all together on this horrible, painful, joyous, exciting, and mysterious ride that is being alive. Now, as we act in the continuing narrative of Stranger Things, we 1983 Midwesterners will repel bullies.”

“We will shelter freaks and outcasts, those who have no home,” he continued. “We will get past the lies. We will hunt monsters. And when we are lost amidst the hypocrisy and the casual violence of certain individuals and institutions, we will, as per Chief Jim Hopper, punch some people in the face when they seek to destroy.”

Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, and more are returning for Stranger Things season 2.

Netflix’s hit sci-fi series follows a group of kids in the '80s battling supernatural forces in Hawkins, Ind.
