Lady Gaga squashes Bradley Cooper romance rumors after Oscars performance
As the great Michael Scott would say, Lady Gaga’s apparent sparks between her and Bradley Cooper on the Oscars stage were all part of “AC-TIIING!”
The Grammy- and now Oscar-winning songstress, 32, went on Jimmy Kimmel Live this week and snuffed out all those suggestions on Twitter about a supposed romance brewing with Cooper, 44, her A Star Is Born costar and director.
“First of all, social media, quite frankly, is the toilet of the internet,” Gaga said. “And what it has done to pop culture is just abysmal. And, yes, people saw love. And guess what, that’s what we wanted you to see.”
Gaga and Cooper performed an intimate rendition of “Shallow,” the Oscar-winning Best Original Song from the film. As stage handlers set up on a piano, the pair walked from the audience and onto the stage for the duet. The money shot for photographers came after Cooper moved his way over to sit by Gaga at the piano and they leaned into each other.
“This is a love song, ‘Shallow,’” Gaga continued. “The movie, A Star Is Born, it’s a love story. We worked so hard, we worked all week on that performance. Bradley, who — and you know, I never relinquish control about a live stage performance and I’ve done a million of them — but he directed this film and he directed, obviously, the musical moments in the film, and he directed ‘Shallow,’ the moment, in the film. So I knew that he had the vision for how it should go, and so I was like, ‘What do you think, Bradley?’ And he laid it all out. Everything that you saw — the way it was shot, the way that they pushed the piano out, you saw them put the piano together and us walk up on stage, all of it — that was all him.”
The glow from the audience, though, came from Gaga’s lighting guy LeRoy Bennett. “I’m like, ‘We need to light the entire room with amber lights because Bradley wants honeycomb and we gotta give him what he wants,'” she said.
“From a performance perspective it was so important to both of us that we were connected the entire time,” she added. “Look, I’ve had my arms wrapped around Tony Bennet for three years touring the world. When you’re singing love songs, that’s what you want people to feel.”
