There have been three other cinematic iterations of A Star Is Born, but that didn’t deter Bradley Cooper from making this latest version for his directorial debut. Cooper is a longtime music fan, and he was also drawn to the emotionality of ASIB’s core relationship. “I always wanted to tell a love story — I knew that deep down,” he says. “I thought, ‘There’s nothing better for me cinematically to be able to tell a real love story, a broken love story.’”
The drama charts the passionate but tragic romance between depressed rock star Jackson Maine (Cooper) and struggling songwriter Ally (Lady Gaga). It’s also an exhilarating rock musical with original songs and kinetic performance scenes shot at real-life festivals like Coachella. Says Cooper: “We knew the story we wanted to tell, and then the music really became a character in the movie.”
