Here's why Kimmel thinks Trump would like 'The Shape of Water'
ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" - Season 15

Jimmy Kimmel already got in a dig at President Trump when he tweeted about the Oscars’ diminished ratings, but the Academy Awards host threw more jabs during his monologue on Wednesday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live.

“Trump loves saying the ratings are down to insinuate that is a show of some kind of support for him, but the truth is, every year since Netflix happened, the ratings are down for every big TV show,” Kimmel said. He went on to clarify he meant telecasts like “the Super Bowl, Emmys, Grammys, Golden Globes.”

“But Trump thinks he caused the ratings to go down,” Kimmel laughed.

The Oscars telecast on Sunday night was in fact the lowest-rated in the show’s history. Ratings have been steadily dropping since 2014 when the Academy Awards ceremony garnered 43.7 million viewers. Trump, in response, had tweeted, “Lowest rated Oscars in HISTORY. Problem is, we don’t have Stars anymore – except your President (just kidding, of course)!”

Kimmel returned the sling by writing, “Thanks, lowest rated President in HISTORY.”

“I want to point out that my tweet got twice as many likes as his tweet,” Kimmel noted during his monologue.

“Trump always has a problem with the Academy Awards,” he continued, “which is surprising because I really think he would really like the Best Picture winner, The Shape of Water.”

Directed by Guillermo del Toro — who also took home the Oscar for Best Director — the film stars Sally Hawkins as a mute janitor who falls in love with the amphibian creature held captive at a secret government facility. As Kimmel said, it’s about “a monster that has sex with a woman who can’t talk about it.”

“Basically, it’s like his life’s story,” he joked of Trump.
