See how the Oscars crowd reacted to shocking best picture mistake
- Movie
Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, who once played two of the most iconic outlaws of all time in Arthur Penn’s Bonnie and Clyde, unwittingly became robbers of a different kind at Sunday night’s Oscars. After the pair mistakenly announced La La Land as the 2017 best picture winner, the film’s producers had their dream victory snatched away, seemingly as a result of an organizational error; Beatty apparently took to the stage with a duplicate envelope containing the name of the best actress winner, La La Land star Emma Stone, instead of the correct card for best picture.
As show producers ran to the stage to inform the La La Land production team — already nearly three acceptance speeches into their short-lived victory — they’d actually lost the award, stunned audience members at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre were heard gasping in disbelief as the best picture trophies were turned over to their rightful owners: the filmmakers behind Barry Jenkins’ critically lauded drama Moonlight.
From Ryan Gosling’s bewildered smirk from the Oscars stage to David Oyelowo’s wide-eyed glare from the crowd, check out some of the night’s most memorable, candid reaction shots to what is arguably the most shocking moment in Academy Awards history.
