Oscars producer Michael DeLuca breaks down Hollywood's biggest night
Michael DeLuca has been making movies since the early 1990s — memorable films such as Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights, David Fincher’s Seven, and the lucrative Austin Powers franchise. He has even made it to the good seats at the Academy Awards as the producer of three Best Picture nominees, including Moneyball, Captain Phillips, and The Social Network.
Now, he will join an even more rarefied group as the producer of the 89th Academy Awards. Along with his partner-in-crime Jennifer Todd, the duo are promising a film clip-heavy show Sunday night that celebrates movies, including this year’s contenders and those beloved from today and yesterday. De Luca and Todd have already announced that each of the nominated songs will be performed during the festivities, with John Legend performing the two songs from La La Land; Lin-Manuel Miranda and Auli’i Cravalho singing Moana‘s “How Far I’ll Go”; Sting performing “The Empty Chair” from Jim: The James Foley Story and Justin Timberlake singing his hit song from Trolls, “Can’t Stop the Feeling.”
When it comes to politics though, DeLuca is staying out of it. He and Todd educated the nominees on what to expect from the night’s festivities at the Oscar luncheon held at the beginning of the month — and though he urged them all to speak from the heart, he didn’t give his opinion on whether or not politics should be invoked as they have been at many of the award shows this season. Here is DeLuca expanding on that answer in an interview that ran on EW Radio this week:
DeLuca also offered some insight into what it’s like to be sitting in the room on the big night and not win. As a three-time loser, he has a perspective that will be shared by the majority of the people in the room on Sunday after all the winners are announced. Here is what it feels like to hear someone else’s name called:
