Lorde broke out of her sartorial comfort zone and delivered a memorable fashion moment in this dreamy lavender Monique Lhuillier gown, with a fitted strapless bodice and full feathered skirt. She paired the airy princess dress with natural makeup and her dark wavy hair off her face and chopped at the collarbone.
BEST: Asahd Khaled
For the second year in a row, the best dressed on the VMAs carpet is a member of the next generation of music superstars. While DJ Khaled hit the carpet in a brightly-colored printed track jacket, his 10-month-old son Asahd is the real style star here, in a Gucci suit embroidered with flowers and fantasy monsters.
BEST: Sofia Carson
Descendants actress Sofia Carson brought the glamour in a black dotted Christian Dior dress with a plunging, ruffled neckline. Outside of her dramatic gown, the Disney starlet kept it simple with a smoky eye, nude lip, sleek updo, and minimal jewelry.
BEST: Millie Bobby Brown
The Stranger Things star isn’t just a newly-minted Emmy nominee — she’s also an emerging junior fashionista. Brown rocked Rodarte on the VMA carpet in a black tulle dress with ruffles and shimmering gold polka dots. She finished off the look with natural makeup, her hair pulled back, and heeled black patent boots.
BEST: Fifth Harmony
Camila who? The four ladies of Fifth Harmony brought the glamour when they hit the carpet in black, white, and red monochrome looks that complemented each other while also reflecting all four stars’ individual tastes.
BEST: Willow Sage Hart
Video Vanguard Award recipient Pink’s entire family suited up to hit the carpet together, but the pop star’s daughter Willow stole the show in a polka-dotted three-piece suit, black tie, and crisp white pocket square. She finished out the look with chic blunt bangs and her long blonde hair in braids.
BEST: Billy Eichner
Much as we love Billy on the Street, Billy on the Carpet might be even better. Eichner wasn’t joking around when he got dressed for the VMAs, choosing a short-sleeved shirt with a summery pineapple print and dark grey pants.
BEST: Yara Shahidi
On a red carpet that is so often marked by gaudy and outrageous fashion, Yara Shahidi brought some welcome genuine glamour. The Black-ish star was elegant in a deep gold one-shouldered Zimmerman dress, finishing the look with dangling earrings and her hair pulled back.
DNCE split the difference between best and worst, with guitarist JinJoo Lee and bassist Cole Whittle looking fierce in a glittering black minidress and floral suit, respectively; unfortunately, frontman Joe Jonas and drummer Jack Lawless didn’t quite match their bandmates’ high style, in a strangely glittery shirt and ill-fitting jacket (on Jonas) and paint-splattered jeans with a frilly shirt (on Lawless).
WORST: Ed Sheeran
WORST: Vanessa Hudgens
The usually reliable Vanessa Hudgens served a rare fashion disappointment in this perplexing Yanina Couture dress.
WORST: Jared Leto
This sequined cape would have been a lot no matter what was worn underneath it, but Jared Leto decided to pair it with a floral high-necked shirt, grey ripped jeans, and sunglasses. As a whole, the look was pulled in a whole lot of different directions.
WORST: Farrah Abraham
The Teen Mom star missed the mark with this all-white ensemble, paired with thigh-high glimmering gold boots and sparkles on her face.
