Upon dropping the funky single “Accelerate” last week, Christina Aguilera proved she’s ready to return to the dance floor on her upcoming eighth studio album Liberation; now, the pop diva is teasing the record’s diverse sounds by letting her powerhouse vocals loose once again atop a new, gorgeous ballad “Twice.”

Released Friday morning, the somber, piano-driven tune lands as a welcome return to form for the 37-year-old, as the singer pensively reflects on her life via a towering vocal performance.

“Are you devil are you angel / Am I heaven, am I hell / I can barely find the proof to save myself,” she sings over the song’s first verse. “Are you water are you fire / Are you filthy are you pure / Oh I thought by now I’d know, but I’m not sure / Well you’re no angel I never asked you to be / You’re my danger cause that’s just what I need / But it still hurts me.”

Over the song’s chorus, she continues: “Sometimes I wonder what is the meaning of my life / I found the price of love and lost my mind / I will forgive them all of my wrongs and my rights / I’d do it all again and won’t think twice.”

“Love the raw vocal quality on this and the spiritual emotion & tone it captures/conveys for me,” Aguilera wrote of the track on Twitter. “Here is another of the many moods of Liberation.”

Ahead of her performance at the May 20 Billboard Music Awards, Aguilera is widely expected to premiere the Demi Lovato-assisted Liberation single “Fall In Line” in the days ahead, as Lovato is set to join her on the BBMAs stage next Sunday.

Fans will likely get the chance to hear new songs like “Accelerate” and “Twice” on the road later this year when Aguilera embarks on The Liberation Tour, her first traveling concert series since she launched the Back to Basics Tour in 2006.

Liberation, available now for pre-order, is due June 15. Listen to “Twice” above.
