Kelly Clarkson certainly didn’t have a picture-perfect night when she won her first Grammy Award in 2005.

The American Idol winner spoke with EW editor-in-chief Henry Goldblatt on Thursday night as part of Entertainment Weekly‘s A-List event series in New York City where the two talked about the very scary news Clarkson received prior to winning the top award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album.

“I was told I might have cancer that day, so yeah. It was really horrible. I had to have my makeup redone three times,” admitted Clarkson, who grew increasingly paranoid through Grammys night that her multiple wins were God giving her one last good thing before, well, dying. “And I kept winning!” The singer also admitted that she has a history of cervical and ovarian cancer in her family.

The night still definitely have some pinch-worthy moments though, “Alicia Keys and Stevie Wonder gave me my first Grammy, which was pretty rad.”
