Taking a break from the theatrics of her Witness tour stop at Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, Perry yielded the stage to attendees Katy (yes, Perry freaked out over having the same name) and Becky for a surprise wedding proposal on National Coming Out Day.
Perry, dressed in a sparkling ensemble, mentioned to her fellow Katy, “You said you had a wish. Well, this is a shooting star,” and pointed to a stage prop. Katy’s wish was to spend the rest of her life with her girlfriend, Becky, who was also celebrating her birthday at the time.
Katy got down on one knee and Perry dropped to the stage floor as the audience erupted in cheers.
Fans in the crowd recorded the moment, and Perry posted bits of it to her Instagram story. Watch below.
National Coming Out Day celebrated those who have come out as LGBTQ and highlighted the resources and support that are out there for those still in the closet. Arrow-verse mastermind Greg Berlanti also marked the occasion by releasing the first poster for his upcoming film, Love, Simon, based on the critically acclaimed LGBTQ-themed YA novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda.
Perry, who kicked off her Witness tour in September, accepted the National Equality Award from the Human Rights Campaign at its 2017 Gala in Los Angeles.
Discussing her 2008 song “I Kissed a Girl,” she said at the ceremony in March, “Truth be told, I did more than that! But how was I going to reconcile that with the gospel-singing girl raised in youth groups that were pro-conversion camps? What I did know was that I was curious, and even then I knew that sexuality was not as black and white as this dress.”
