Lorde defends controversial VMAs performance
Lorde had no problem with her MTV Video Music Awards performance last month — and, instead, thinks fans upset by her interpretive dance during the show were made uneasy by her expressing joy.
“It’s sort of embarrassing to watch someone experience intense joy,” Lorde told Marc Maron on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast. “I think that’s why people find what I do quite disconcerting. People got, like, so angry about me performing at the VMAs. I just danced. I just danced! And I danced with full f—ing joy. Some people were like, ‘We get it, we love it.’ And some people were like, ‘This is offensive that I have to watch this.'”
At the VMAs, Lorde performed an interpretive dance alongside her track “Homemade Dynamite” and didn’t sing a single note. The performance was criticized online soon after, with many fans feeling let down and confused by her appearance.
