The ladies were ready for this question

Fifth Harmony came to make a statement — and boy did they succeed.

The newly revamped group on Sunday took the VMA awards stage, confusingly, with five members, but just a few minutes into their performance, that extra suddenly jumped off the stage. Cue the collective gasps in living rooms everywhere.

The ladies (Ally Brooke, Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane, and Lauren Jauregui) stopped by Good Morning America on Tuesday and addressed the moment. “We get asked all the time if we’re getting a fifth member,” Brooke told host Lara Spencer, downplaying any direct reference to recently departed member Camila Cabello, who left the group last year, “and we wanted to show the world in an artistic way that, hey, the four of us are Fifth Harmony.”

She continued the uplifting angle: “We’re stronger and better than we’ve ever been — and honestly it was such a monumental moment for us. We were at the VMAs! We had rain! We had splits! We had a mic drop!”

The outfit also performed “He Like That,” off their new, self-titled LP.

A clip of that performance is streaming above.
