Katy Perry's 'Swish Swish' called out by Taylor Swift friend Ruby Rose
Is this Perry's shot back across the bow of Swift?
As fans speculate whether Katy Perry’s new song, “Swish Swish” featuring Nicki Minaj, is a shot across the bow of Taylor Swift, one of Swift’s friends is slamming Perry on Twitter for her latest track.
Orange Is the New Black star Ruby Rose spoke out against Perry’s song via Twitter, writing, “‘Purposeful poop’ to ‘bomb a petit’ to a sloppy mess of writing over the top of Funkagenda..stop trying to make ‘Wit… I mean ‘fetch’ happen.” She added in a second tweet, “I just think with everything going on in the world to go from rebranding as political activist only to ditch it and go low.. is.. a bummer.”
In later tweets, Rose wrote, “I’ve always stood up for the people I love and against things I think are cheap or mean spirited. That’s not new. You have to follow your [heart emoji].” She also took a shot at Perry’s sales, replying to a now-deleted tweet, “You are her fans you should buy all her songs so the songs will finally chart. If as many as tweeted me bought her last 3 .. they’d be hits.”
Rumors have swirled for years that Perry and Swift are feuding and Swift’s 1989 song “Bad Blood” was purportedly aimed at Perry after the two pop superstars engaged in a reported battle over backup dancers. Witness (out June 9) is Perry’s first album since “Bad Blood” and when asked by Entertainment Weekly if the record contained a reaction to Swift, Perry said it was “not my question to answer — if it’s about me.”
She added, “I think [my new album is] a very empowered record. There is no one thing that’s calling out any one person. One thing to note is: You can’t mistake kindness for weakness and don’t come for me. Anyone. Anyone. Anyone. Anyone. And that’s not to any one person and don’t quote me that it is, because it’s not. It’s not about that. Honestly, when women come together and they decide to unite, this world is going to be a better place. Period end of story. But, let me say this: Everything has a reaction or a consequence so don’t forget about that, okay, honey. [Laughs] We got to keep it real, honey. This record is not about anyone else! This record is about me being seen and heard so that I can see and hear everyone else! It’s not even about me! It’s about everything that I see out there that I digest. I think there’s a healing in it for me and vulnerability. If people want to connect and be healed and feel vulnerable and feel empowered and strong, God bless and here it is.”
Fans, however, are pointing at the lyrics to “Swish Swish” and connecting it to Swift:
Don’t lose no sleep
Don’t need opinions
From a selfish or a sheep
Don’t you come for me
No, not today
I got your number
‘Cause you’re a joker
And I’m a courtside killer queen
And you will kiss the ring
You best believe
The appearance of Minaj on Perry’s track is also raising some eyebrows, as the rapper and Swift participated in their own war of words following the MTV Video Music Awards nominations in 2015. At that time, Perry posted a not-so-veiled shot at Swift: “Finding it ironic to parade the pit women against other women argument about as one unmeasurably capitalizes on the take down of a woman…”
