Musicians, comedians, and visual artists are banding together to benefit Planned Parenthood with a new series of 7-inch vinyl records that will be released both as a physical box set and as a digital download.
“Lawmakers with extreme views are working hard to shut down Planned Parenthood,” the creative collective behind the set said in a statement. “If they succeed, millions of Americans will lose access to basic health services, including STD testing and treatment, birth control, and life-saving cancer screenings. 7-Inches for Planned Parenthood is a response to this threat.”
Chvrches, Estelle, Feist, and Sleater-Kinney all wrote new music for the set, while artists including Björk and Bon Iver give new takes on previously released songs. It also includes music from Common, Elliott Smith, Foo Fighters, Mitski, Sharon Van Etten, and more.
As for comedy, most of the entries were recorded at California’s Largo club. Jenny Slate, Janeane Garofalo, Margaret Cho, Sarah Silverman, Tig Notaro, and Zach Galifianakis are all featured, among others. There are also spoken word entries: Margaret Atwood read poetry for the collection, for example.
“We’re incredibly grateful to have the support of so many artists and entertainers, many of them who have themselves relied on us for health care,” Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards said in a statement. “Planned Parenthood has been around for 100 years, and one in five women in America have turned to us for care. Planned Parenthood has stood defiantly in the face of opposition for a century, and we’re not backing down now.”
“All the proceeds go to Planned Parenthood, but more importantly, I’m hoping 7-Inches for Planned Parenthood can exist in some way in popular culture and maybe make people who hadn’t previously thought of Planned Parenthood as an organization start to consider how essential it is for so many people,” 7-Inches creative director Brandon Stosuy tells EW. “Money’s important, obviously, but the more people are thinking about Planned Parenthood, and understanding it, and realizing it needs to survive, the better.”
See the full list of contributors below. 7-Inches for Planned Parenthood will be available in the coming weeks. Hear St. Vincent and John Legend’s cover of “Lovin’ You” — awkwardly (and hilariously) interrupted by Galifianakis — above.
