'The Far Field' is due out April 7

Future Islands officially announced their next album, The Far Field, due out April 7 via 4AD, and released its first single, the dreamy, upbeat “Ran.”

Produced by John Congleton (Rogue Wave, Sleater-Kinney, Sigur Ros), The Far Field follows their 2014 breakout album Singles, which featured the hit “Seasons (Waiting on You).” The group experienced a meteoric rise when they performed the track on The Late Show with David Letterman and earned millions of YouTube views due in part to lead singer Samuel T. Herring’s wild stage presence and uninhibited dance moves.

Per a release, The Far Field will house a dozen “chest-pounding” tracks that “brilliantly express the band’s central themes they’ve been exploring for the last decade: that there is power in emotional vulnerability, that one can find a way to laugh and cry in the same breath – and be stronger for it.” The Baltimore-based band’s fifth album, The Far Field will also be the first to feature drums from Michael Lowry, who joined Future Islands just before the Letterman appearance.

The collection will also feature a collaboration with Blondie’s Debbie Harry called “Shadows.” (Congleton produced the iconic group’s forthcoming album, Pollinator.)
