Britney Spears is joining in the chorus of artists paying their respects to George Michael, who died on Christmas Day.

“I’ve been thinking about George Michael today, and the positive effect he’s had on this world,” Spears wrote on her Instagram account. “He was a brilliant artist, talented songwriter, inspiring performer, and did amazing things for the LGBTQ community. He will be missed, but his kind soul will never be forgotten.”

In addition to Spears, singers like Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney, Madonna, Lady Gaga, and Michael’s former Wham! partner Andrew Ridgeley posted tributes to Michael online.

On Tuesday, Michael’s family released a statement to PEOPLE thanking fans for their support. “For someone whose life was ultimately about his music and the love he had for his family and friends, his fans and the world at large, there could be no more fitting tribute … From the bottom of our hearts we thank those who, rightly, have chosen to celebrate his life and legacy at this most distressing of times.”

In the wake of Michael’s death at age 53, streams of his music on Spotify increased by more than 3100 percent.
