At New York Comic-Con 2022, Jack Black gave the audience an insight to Bowser's character. "I thought he was just gonna be this fire-breathing monster, but he's got a sensitive side," Black said. "He's got a little vulnerability, a little insecurity, and that's part of why he's so furious with rage is he struggles that maybe he isn't loved enough. And that was kind of a cool part of playing the part is seeing that other side of the villain."
