Ready Player One
One corner of Hollywood just transformed into the retro-futurist world of Ready Player One. Warner Bros. has crafted an interactive maze for the movie, which opens this week, and EW has exclusive photos of the cast exploring it with director Steven Spielberg.
Much of the movie has callbacks to ’80s iconography, and here they are in the Rubik’s Cube room. From left: Tye Sheridan (playing Wade Watts), Olivia Clarke (Ar3mis), Lena Waithe (Aech), Spielberg, Ben Mendelsohn (the villainous Nolan Sorrento), Hannah John-Kamen (F’nale Zandor), Philip Zhao (Sho), and Win Morisaki (Daito).
In the mirror room, the gang gathers for a selfie by amateur photographer Steven Spielberg.
In the film, vertical towers of old trailers known as The Stacks are the poverty-stricken housing of the future. Here’s the exterior of the Hollywood maze, which begins with a smaller scale version.
Spielberg has autographed an old E.T. VHS box for Ernest Cline, author of the novel and co-screenwriter of the movie.
Sho and Daito
Win Morisaki, who in addition to acting in RPO sings with the Japanese pop group PrizmaX, poses with Philip Zhao, who makes his debut in the film.
Wade's Hide Out
When he ventures into the virtual reality realm of the OASIS, Wade Watts does so from the confines of this van hidden beneath the scrap of a nearby junkyard. A stationary bike allows him to generate power for his gear.
Sorrento and Aech
The bad guy and the behemoth. Ben Mendelsohn, who costars as corporate crusher Nolan Sorrento, poses with Lena Waithe, who plays Aech, an orc-sized brawler within the OASIS.
Olivia Clarke costars as Art3mis, one of the pop-culture savvy Easter egg hunters, or “Gunters,” trying to solve a series of puzzles that will determine ownership of the OASIS.
Spielberg and Friend
I would like to see what kind of photos Steven Spielberg has on his phone.
Into the Maze
Okay, from here, the cast and filmmaker step aside. If you’re on the corner of Hollywood and Vine in the near future, check out the Ready Player One maze for yourself. Here’s a look at what’s inside.
