Under the Armor: Go behind the scenes of your favorite Marvel movies

Star-Lord takes to the stars. In this shot, Chris Pratt's Peter Quill escapes from the planet Morag after swiping the Orb and leaping onto his spaceship, the Milano. "This ended up becoming one of the key images in the trailer," Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige tells EW. You can practically hear Awesome Mix Vol. 1 in the background.

The stars aren't afraid to get down and dirty: Here, Scarlett Johansson throws a few punches in the opening of the third Captain America movie, set in Lagos, Nigeria.

If Feige had his way, the Hulk would've had a very different aesthetic in Joss Whedon's first Avengers movie. "Joss was choreographing the helicarrier fight between Thor and Hulk — cool because it's the precursor to the battle between Thor and Hulk in Thor: Ragnarok," Feige explains. "I tried to convince Joss that the Hulk looked good enough like this, no CG needed."

Even the heroes without wings sometimes get caught up in the high-flying fun. "By the time Paul Rudd became a superhero, wires were a standard thing," Feige jokes. "So Paul insisted on being on wires even though he was just standing around."

Anthony Mackie spent a lot of time airborne for his role as Sam Wilson, a.k.a. the Falcon, and this photo shows one of his first times on a wire. "You can tell how hard he's trying in this particular shot, but he's now an expert at this," Feige says.

Epic action sequences require a lot of visual effects and, sometimes, a second pair of hands. In this shot from the finale of Winter Soldier, Sebastian Stan, Chris Evans, and their stunt doubles prep for the massive fight scene in the bowels of a crashing helicarrier.

Benedict Cumberbatch shot his cameo for Thor: Ragnarok during the production of Doctor Strange, and here he's seen floating in front of the Sanctum Sanctorum's iconic window before he heads downstairs to meet the Asgardian. Also, Feige adds, those wires were just for backup. "Benedict has fancy English acting training," he jokes. "He doesn't need wires to float!"

One of Feige's all-time favorite photos is this shot of Danai Gurira's Okoye in a South Korean casino, taking out Klaue's henchman before an instantly classic wig throw. Certainly gives new meaning to the phrase "wig snatching."

It's tough to be from outer space: Michael Rooker and Zoe Saldana must arrive hours before many of the other stars in order to get made up. "The patience and discipline required of our actors is amazing," Feige says. "They spend a long time in the makeup chair and then go give great performances for the next 12 hours on top of that. I really admire their discipline and the lengths they go to inhabit these roles so well."
