Star Wars: The Last Jedi finally arrives in theaters this week, but the film has already created a real-life breakout star. Newcomer Kelly Marie Tran plays Rose Tico in Rian Johnson's space opera and the actress is reveling in her big break — which comes after years of work as an improv comic and actress trying to make it in Hollywood. "The day I found out [I was cast], Rian was like, 'Oh we want you in this movie,' I had just left work on my lunch break to go to this meeting," Tran, who was working as an office assistant when the Star Wars call came, told EW. "Afterward, he told me that I couldn’t tell anyone, so I went back to work and answered phones and answered emails, like nothing happened. It was the most bizarre experience. Inside I was like, Ugh! Crazy!" Tran, who is the daughter of Vietnamese immigrants, is now the first Asian-American woman to lead a Star Wars film. "Growing up I watched a lot of [pop culture] and didn’t really get to see a lot of people that looked like me," she told EW. "I think that I’m really lucky to be this person, and I get to be part of this franchise. I hope that it is a move in a better direction." Ahead, 11 photos of Tran enjoying her major moment at the Last Jedi premiere.
