"Handmaid's Tale," "Meadowland" helmer could join J.Lo's fact-based drug lord movie.

Jennifer Lopez has tapped a mighty cinema matriarch to helm her upcoming Griselda Blanco drama The Godmother.

EW can confirm The Handmaid's Tale and Meadowland helmer (and lauded cinematographer) Reed Morano is in talks to direct Lopez's upcoming turn as the infamous Colombian drug lord in STX Films' planned production about her controversial life, which Lopez had previously considered directing herself as her filmmaking debut.

Deadline, which first reported news of Morano's discussions, Oscar-winning screenwriter William Monahan (The Departed) is also in talks to rewrite a first draft of the project's screenplay, which was originally penned by Oscar nominee Terry Winter (The Wolf of Wall Street) and the Emmy-nominated Regina Corrado (Deadwood).

The Godmother will reportedly follow Lopez as Blanco, who worked her way up the ranks of the male-dominated Colombian drug circuit, overcoming an impoverished childhood to become one of the most revered, powerful, and dangerous lords in the world known as "La Madrina." Estimates peg her net worth at more than $2 billion, and she was an instrumental player in Miami's deadly Cocaine Cowboy Wars that ravaged the Florida city from the 1980s through the early 2000s.

In 2012 at age 69, Blanco was shot and killed outside a Medellín butcher shop, after serving nearly two decades in prison on murder and racketeering charges.

Lopez was first announced to star in the film back when it was in development at HBO, though STX — where Lopez made her highest-grossing live-action showing of all time in the stripper drama Hustlers, which grossed over $100 million domestically on top of earning the actress-producer a Golden Globe nod — later acquired the film in July 2019. Lopez and her longtime producing partner Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas (Second Act, Hustlers) and her manager, Benny Medina, as well as Julie Yorn, will produce The Godmother, with Winter, Alex Pettyfer, Alex Brown, and Rick Yorn executive-producing.

A release date and further casting details for The Godmother have yet to be announced.
