Captain Marvel
Captain Marvel follows the interstellar warrior Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) and a young, inexperienced Nick Fury as they team up to stop an alien threat. "[Carol is] his first extraterrestrial," Jackson tells EW. "She opens up a whole new world for him."

Carol can fly, shoot fire out of her fists, and absorb energy. So in other words, she's not someone you want to mess with.

Here's a better look at Carol's Starforce companions: On the left, we've got Korath the Pursuer (Djimon Hounsou, making his Marvel return after Guardians of the Galaxy) and At-Lass (Algenis Perez Soto). On the right, Gemma Chan plays elite sniper Minn-Erva.

But Carol isn't always wearing Kree colors. Here she is in her red, gold, and blue ensemble.

“You have this Kree part of her that’s unemotional, that is an amazing fighter and competitive,” Larson tells EW. “Then there’s this human part of her that is flawed but is also the thing that she ends up leading by. It’s the thing that gets her in trouble, but it’s also the thing that makes her great. And those two sides warring against each other is what makes her her.”

“She has a sense of determination that fits this character very well,” Jackson says of his superpowered costar. “It’s a lot of work to get ready for something like this, and she did all that. She’s got the talent and the skill to make it something that’s going to be very special.”

Part of Larson's preparation for the role included meeting and training with real Air Force pilots — even going up for a flight in an F-16.

The Nick Fury we meet in Captain Marvel still has a long way to go before becoming the jaded, eyepatch-wearing secret agent we know best.

Captain Marvel
“The Nick Fury we meet is sort of a bureaucrat in an interesting sort of way,” Jackson explains. “He hadn’t become jaded or a slave to the cynicism that we normally see. He sort of respects the people that are above him, more so than the Nick Fury that people are used to.”

Carol's mentor and the commander of Starforce is Yon-Rogg (Jude Law).

Captain Marvel
“He is driven by a belief in the divine leadership of the Kree people,” Law says. “So he’s almost a devout warrior — unquestioning, conservative, but inspirational.”

Yon-Rogg and Carol have a close mentor-mentee relationship. “These extraordinary powers she has, he sees them as something of a blessing and something that she has to learn how to control,” Law says. “That’s a motif throughout the piece, the element of learning to control one’s emotions and to use your powers wisely.”
