“Once and for all.” That’s the message of the new Avengers: Infinity War teaser, which actually managed to pack a whole lot into a 30-second Super Bowl spot. It starts with Iron Man, Doctor Strange, and Spider-Man, all on the same team. Ever think you’d see that? Let’s take a closer look…
The Mind Stone
Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch and Paul Bettany’s Vision share a connection that is deeper than most. She owes her supernatural powers to enhancement from the Mind Stone, which was used by HYDRA to experiment on her and her late brother. The same stone, embedded in The Vision’s forehead, helped bring the synthezoid hero to life.
The Vision is Targeted
This gem is also a key piece of the Infinity Gauntlet, which galactic death-dealer Thanos will need if he is going to gain power over all space and time. Securing it means the end of Vision … and she knows it.
Can Vision Live Without It?
A few seconds later, we see Chris Evans as Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, and an apparently wounded Vision limping behind them. I don’t see the stone in his forehead anymore.
The "Cosmic" Team
Chris Hemsworth’s Thor venturing forth with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Awesome detail: Teenage Groot is on his phone.
High Above New York ...
Some teens are more focused, like young Peter Parker here. Tom Holland is perched upon a halo-shaped spacecraft high above New York City. The air is thin. He’s got to take of the mask from his Iron Spider suit.
Friend or Foe?
Tom Hiddleston’s Loki is one of the few repeat villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it’s hard to know just yet which side he’ll fall on in Infinity War. The conflict of the original Avengers was all the result of his alliance with Thanos.
Thor’s still missing his eye from the events of Ragnarok, and the God of Thunder looks worn out from his many battles. Even a quasi-immortal like him has been through a lot. As stories conclude in this chapter, his may be one of them.
Get This Man a Shield!
Captain America in Wakanda with Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman). Cap gave up his red, white, and blue shield, and here we see him with the blade-like Vibranium gauntlets designed by Panther’s sister Shuri (Letitia Wright, unseen). They look more intimidating here than they do on the toy.
Suit of Armor
Would you hit a man with glasses? Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark has a new suit, one that rebuilds itself with apparent nanotechnology after being shredded.
Mother and Father Reunion
Karen Gillan’s Nebula looks ready to get revenge on Thanos, her oppressive “father,” who trained her to be a killer. Maybe he’ll regret that now.
Widow in Wakanda
Black Widow rides into battle alongside Wakandan warriors and the women of the Dora Milaje.
Winter Is Coming
Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier charges into battle through the dense jungle of Wakanda. Although he has been in hibernation since Civil War, he does not look relaxed or rested. Alien invasions have a way of raising the blood pressure.
Science vs. Magic
Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange is trying to put together some magic, and Iron Man just flies right through it. The team isn’t fully in synch just yet. But there’s time. Maybe.
The Man Comes Around
Oh yeah, then there’s this guy. The humorless dealer of death, come to bend time and space and all reality to his will: Josh Brolin as Thanos. Brace yourself. Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters May 3.
