J.K. Simmons
Simmons is up for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for playing the curmudgeonly Fred Mertz actor William Frawley in Being the Ricardos. He told EW in January, "This is a brilliant ensemble from top to bottom and I hope the movie gets some of that kind of attention."

Kodi Smit-McPhee
First-time nominee Smit-McPhee already won the Golden Globe for his supporting role in The Power of the Dog. The film garnered four Oscar nods in acting categories and 12 overall.

Troy Kotsur
The CODA patriarch won the SAG Award for Best Actor for his role in the film, which also took home Best Ensemble. If Kotsur wins on Oscar night, he will be the first deaf male actor and second deaf person to do so, second to his costar Marlee Matlin's 1987 victory.

Although Garfield made headlines for his surprise appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, he's nominated for his performance in Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tick, Tick... Boom! He's one of many Marvel actors recognized by the Academy for other roles this year.

Gyllenhaal was nominated in 2009 for acting in Crazy Heart. This time around, she's being considered for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Lost Daughter, which she also directed. She won three Film Independent Spirit Awards for the film.

Will Smith and Aunjanue Ellis
Smith and Ellis arrived arm in arm. They are both nominated for their roles as the heads of the Williams family in King Richard. "Aunjanue, you pushed every single day," Smith thanked his costar in his SAG Awards acceptance speech. "You demanded authenticity, and you did it in such a beautiful and quiet and powerful way."

Steven Spielberg
Spielberg is nominated for his direction of West Side Story. He protested the Oscars' decision to pretape eight categories, saying in a statement, "I feel that at the Academy Awards there is no above the line, there is no below the line. All of us are on the same line bringing the best of us to tell the best stories we possibly can."

Cooper wasn't nominated for his role in Licorice Pizza, but he did receive a nod for producing Guillermo del Toro's Nightmare Alley. This is his ninth nomination, with his last in 2020 for producing The Joker.
