Ex Machina star Oscar Isaac is set to tackle a different Ex Machina. Let’s explain.

EW has learned that Isaac, currently seen in theaters as X-Wing all-star Poe Dameron in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, will headline The Great Machine, a film adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Tony Harris’ Ex Machina comic series. This isn’t to be confused with Ex Machina, Isaac’s 2014 movie with director Alex Garland.

You can see now why Legendary Pictures, which recently acquired the movie rights to the comics, chose a different name for the feature.

Ex Machina, the comics, featuring artwork from Harris, centered around Mitchell Hundred, a former superhero (the world’s first superhero, in fact) who went by the name The Great Machine and bore the power to speak with machines. Hundred runs for New York City mayor in the aftermath of 9/11. Isaac will now star as the character in the film. So, in a roundabout way, fans hoping he would play a superhero in a movie will kind of get their wish.

Isaac will also produce The Great Machine with his manager Jason Spire, while Anna Waterhouse and Joe Shrapnel, who wrote the Kristen Stewart film Seberg, is set to pen the script.

After The Rise of Skywalker, which crossed the $1 billion mark at the box office, Isaac also has a role in another sci-fi property, Dune.

The Hollywood Reporter was the first to report the news.
