It turns out, if you thank Adam Sandler for something, then you might end up with even more things to be thankful for.

Appearing on PeopleTV’s Couch Surfing, Henry Winkler revealed that his role as Coach Klein in The Waterboy was the result of him calling Sandler to show appreciation for being name-checked in his classic “The Chanukah Song” on Saturday Night Live. And it ended up working out well for all involved.

“This is one of his favorite movies, I think, that he’s ever made,” Winkler said of Sandler. “It is also one of his most popular. So many college football players have told me that as they’re going to the game on the bus, the coach plays The Waterboy for them.”

The Waterboy marked the first collaboration between the two, but Winkler would subsequently appear in many Sandler films, including as his father in Click.

Winkler currently stars on HBO’s Barry, which airs Sundays at 10:30 p.m. ET.
