This is a banner year for Disney’s live-action remakes, with Aladdin and The Lion King on the way and a new Lady and the Tramp set to debut on Disney’s upcoming streaming service. But first up is Tim Burton‘s spin on Dumbo, which had its world premiere in Los Angeles on March 11. The first reactions to the film have hit Twitter, and are largely positive, with many calling it a return to form for Burton.

“It’s a beautiful and whimsical movie, starring a CGI elephant with so much heart,” Gamespot’s Chris E. Hayner said, adding that “it’s the best Burton’s been in years.” Several critics and journalists also praised the film’s visual elements, particularly the production design and the CGI title character, as well as its pro-animal rights message.

There were some dissenting voices, however. IGN’s Tom Jorgensen noted, “Despite some great visuals, a very fun Michael Keaton performance, and an adorable baby pachyderm, the movie never really gets you caring as much about what’s going on as the original. The human stories feel undercooked and it really rains on the parade.”

The remake of the 1941 animated classic stars Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Eva Green, and Alan Arkin, and hits theaters March 29. Check out a roundup of the first reactions below.

And if you see Ben Mekler’s tweets, he is, of course, kidding.
