Mike Newell’s 1994 movie Four Weddings and a Funeral is a bona fide romantic-comedy classic. So, did the director have any qualms about his ability to recapture the magic when screenwriter Richard Curtis asked him to oversee a short film, One Red Nose Day and a Wedding, that would reunite the cast?
“You have to trust the script,” Newell tells EW. “If the script makes you laugh, then any difficulty goes away. I always assumed that it would work fine.”
Viewers can see the director’s handiwork May 23, when NBC will broadcast One Red Nose Day and a Wedding as part of a night of special programming benefiting Red Nose Day, Comic Relief USA’s campaign to end child poverty. In the meantime, you can get a first look at the reunited cast — Rowan Atkinson, Kristin Scott Thomas, Sophie Thompson, John Hannah, Andie MacDowell, Hugh Grant, Anna Chancellor, David Haig, and James Fleet — below.
