Among the highlights of Sunday’s Super Bowl were the ads for the Guillermo del Toro-produced film Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (out Aug. 9). But del Toro has a much longer, and weirder, history with commercials than you might imagine.

On Sunday, Bloody Disgusting editor-in-chief John Squires tweeted the following question: “My thing is why even be excited about new commercials when Guillermo del Toro already became a werewolf for Alka Seltzer back in 1991?” Accompanying that query was a vintage ad for Alka Seltzer in which a gentleman who looks very much like a young del Toro is indeed seen turning into a lyncanthrope.

So, is it true that the Oscar-winning filmmaker really did once get hairy for an ad? Yes! Del Toro subsequently retweeted Squires’ tweet confirming that it was him.

“Yes this is an OLD Alka-Seltzer commercial (1991) that my company did the make up FX for and I starred in (no beard, 200 pounds lighter),” wrote the filmmaker. “But I did not direct it.”
