The Princess Diaries lives! Or at least, there’s still potential for a third installment in the beloved movie franchise.

On Thursday, Anne Hathaway appeared on Watch What Happens Live alongside her Serenity co-star Matthew McConaughey. When it came time for fans to call in with questions, one fan asked Hathaway a very specific question: What’s the status of a third Princess Diaries film? After all, back in 2017, Meg Cabot (the author of The Princess Diaries books) said that a script existed for it.

Hathaway acknowledged the existence of a script for a third movie but said she and Julie Andrews (who plays Clarisse, queen of Genovia, in the films) are waiting for it to be just perfect. After all, the first film was Hathaway’s original film debut.

“I want to do it, Julie wants to do it, Debra Martin-Chase (our producer) wants to do it,” Hathaway said. “We all really want it to happen, we just don’t want to do it unless it’s perfect. We love it just as much as you guys love it, it’s as important to us as it is to you, and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it.”

That was certainly a satisfying response for fans. Even McConaughey acknowledged as much, saying “insider information!”
