Ja Rule finally breaks his silence on the competing Fyre Festival documentaries
The past week saw the release of two different documentaries about the ill-fated Fyre Festival of 2017. Neither Netflix’s Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened or Hulu’s Fyre Fraud, though, feature interviews with Ja Rule, the rapper who was one of the most famous faces of the festival. But on Sunday, Ja Rule made his thoughts about the documentaries known in a series of tweets.
“I love how [people] watch a doc and think they have all the answers…” Ja Rule tweeted alongside a head-slap emoji. When someone pointed out that they had actually watched both documentaries, the rapper replied, “And you still don’t know s–t.” In subsequent tweets, he made his specific complaints known.
“Hulu PAID BILLY!!! That money should’ve went to the Bahamian [people.] Netflix PAID F—Jerry the same guys that did the promo for the festival…” Ja Rule tweeted, again with a head-slap emoji. “The docs clearly have Billy at fault but let’s blame the rapper lmao ok.”
The rapper is referring to the ethical quandaries that have surrounded both documentaries since their release. Both documentaries portray the blame for the disastrous Fyre Festival as resting with Fyre Media founder Billy McFarland, who has since been sentenced to six years in prison for fraud. Yet, the makers of Hulu’s Fyre Fraud paid McFarland an undisclosed amount of money to give them an interview. At the same time, Netflix’s Fyre was produced in partnership with the social media agency Jerry Media (a.k.a F—Jerry), who were involved in putting Fyre Festival on in the first place. So even though both documentaries seek to expose and explain the massive scam that was Fyre Festival, they each seem to have put money in the pocket of people who perpetuated that scam.
At least, that’s what Ja Rule thinks. The rapper tweeted that he was watching both documentaries “in awe.”
“I never made or got paid one dollar from Fyre…but everyone else did!” He tweeted in all caps. In another tweet he added, “I too was hustled, scammed, bamboozled, hood winked, lead astray!!!”
