The House With a Clock in Its Walls

Jack Black and Cate Blanchett welcome you to a world of witches, warlocks, demon pumpkins, and creepy puppets in the new trailer for The House With a Clock in Its Walls, based on the books by John Bellairs.

Black transforms himself into a young boy's warlock Uncle Jonathan, a role comparable to the supernatural family fun of Goosebumps. When 10-year-old Lewis (Owen Vaccaro of Daddy's Home) goes to live with his kooky kimono-wearing family member in his creaky old house, he learns all about magic from this new guardian. Lewis also encounters next-door neighbor Mrs. Zimmerman (Blanchett), who wears a whole lotta purple and wields a magic umbrella that puts Mary Poppins to shame.

Magic, though, isn't all about card tricks and getting revenge on mean kids at school. A mysterious ticking in the walls of the house offers a reminder that the dark sorcerer (Kyle MacLachlan) who owned the house before placed an enchanted clock somewhere in the walls. When the mechanism goes from three gongs to one, "nothing good" will happen.

Eric Kripke of NBC's Timeless and The CW's Supernatural penned the screenplay based on Bellairs' books, while horror-meister Eli Roth directs. Colleen Camp, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Vanessa Anne Williams, and Sunny Suljic co-star.

"When I was 10, I fell in love with this book," Kripke tweeted when the first trailer came out. "The only fan letter I ever wrote was to its author. It's one of the main inspirations for [Supernatural]. Now we got to make it into a movie. Dreams do come true. If you like [Supernatural], see where it all began."

The House With a Clock in Its Walls will hit theaters on Sep. 21. Watch the new trailer above.
