In the Heights movie sets 2020 release date
In the Heights is finally coming to the big screen.
Warner Bros. has set a release date of June 26, 2020, for the film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes’ Tony-winning musical. The show first opened on Broadway in 2008 and a film adaptation has been in the works for years, with The Weinstein Company acquiring the rights in 2016.
Miranda and Hudes regained the rights earlier this year, after TWC failed to start production on In the Heights before the end of 2017. After TWC co-founder Harvey Weinstein was fired after dozens of sexual misconduct allegations against him, both Miranda and Hudes publicly asked the company to drop the project and return the rights to them. (Weinstein has since pleaded not guilty to multiple sexual assault charges, including rape.)
Warner Bros. soon acquired the rights to In the Heights, and now, the movie is on track for a 2020 release date with Hudes writing the script and Crazy Rich Asians’ Jon M. Chu on board to direct.
Miranda celebrated the news on Twitter, writing, “Is…is this really happening this time?”
Hudes wrote the book and Miranda wrote the music and lyrics for the original show. In all, In the Heights won four Tony Awards and a Grammy.
