The cast of action-thriller Hotel Artemis (out June 8) is packed with well-known actors, including Jodie Foster, Sterling K. Brown, Dave Bautista, Jenny Slate, Sofia Boutella, and Jeff Goldblum. It also features one well-known singer, Father John Misty, a.k.a. Josh Tillman, who makes a cameo at the start of the movie as a bank-robber. How did the indie-folk singer come to appear in this near-future tale about a secret hospital for criminals? The connection is Hotel Artemis filmmaker Drew Pearce, who directed the video for the 2015 Father John Misty single “The Night Josh Tillman Came To Our Apartment” and wanted to honor and continue a longstanding tradition of directors casting music artists in their movies
“Father John Misty is one of the four bank robbers at the beginning,” says Pearce. “I made music videos for Josh, and the camera loves him. The movies when I was growing up, even sci-fi movies and stuff, there would often be a small role for [a musician]. It was usually a member of The Clash in whatever movie it was. [Or] you’d find Iggy Pop in a fantastic cameo. Alex Cox (director of Repo Man and Straight to Hell) did it a lot. I mean, don’t get me wrong, there are loads of f—ing terrible examples as well. I don’t think anyone’s going to hold up Mick Jagger in Freejack as a reason to use rock stars in sci-fi. I just think Josh is amazing on camera, and he was up for it, and he’s also done some work for the soundtrack as well. So, I asked him, and he said, ‘Yes,’ and it was lovely to have him around.”
