The film hits theaters Aug. 17
Alamak! The first official trailer for Crazy Rich Asians, the big-screen adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s best-selling novel, has dropped, and it’s every bit as glam and glitzy as can be. Just look at those cars! Those parties! Those private planes! Crazy rich, indeed.
Starring an all-Asian principal cast, Crazy Rich Asians follows Rachel (Constance Wu), a Chinese-American economics professor who goes to Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick (Henry Golding), only to discover that he comes from an enormously wealthy family from Asia’s old-money set. (As Rachel’s friend Peik Lin, played by rapper-comedian Awkwafina, quips in the trailer, “He’s like the Asian Bachelor.”)
Being the better half of Asia’s most eligible, though, puts a target on Rachel’s back as soon as she lands — and as teased in the trailer, she’s in for more than she bargained for, especially when it comes to Nick’s mother, Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh), who’s wary of her son dating a woman who doesn’t understand the world he comes from.
“She sees this very gullible, very feisty young woman who thinks she can just step in and change the whole system, and that’s not going to work,” Yeoh told EW in November for a first-look cover story. “Eleanor had to fight to be a Young. It didn’t come handed to her on a silver platter. I think when she looks at Rachel, she’s like, ‘You are totally wrong for this, because you don’t even have a concept of what you’re coming into.’” She’ll get that concept soon enough — and now, we’ve gotten a glimpse of it too.
