New documentary from William Friedkin is released Friday
Whether or not you believe in literal demons — and this writer dwells very much in the “not” camp — there is no doubt filmmaker William Friedkin crafted a hell of a movie with 1973’s The Exorcist. Now, the director has returned to the same thematic territory with The Devil and Father Amorth, a documentary about Father Gabrielle Amorth who claimed to have performed thousands of exorcisms.
Amorth agreed to allow Friedkin to shoot him exorcise a woman named Cristina and Friedkin combined that footage with interview material from priests, psychologists, neurosurgeons and non-believers. The result is theatrically released in New York and Los Angeles on Friday.
