This has been a very good week for Kumail Nanjiani who, together with Emily V. Gordon, secured a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination for The Big Sick. But there has been one fly in the ointment — or maybe that should be vegetable in the ice cream — for the Silicon Valley star. Not long after the nominations were announced on Tuesday, director Edgar Wright tweeted that he had told Nanjiani and Gordon that they would be nominated — and that, if he was proven correct, the former would have to eat a bowl of brussels sprouts. The problem? Well, as Nanjiani himself subsequently tweeted, “Edgar loves Brussel sprouts. I hate Brussel sprouts.”

Nanjiani, however, is clearly a man of his word — and he has the photographic evidence to prove it. Earlier Thursday, Wright posted images of the actor-writer chowing down on a bowl of the aforementioned Brassica oleracea. “I love Brussels Sprouts,” wrote Wright, whose own film Baby Driver received three nominations on Tuesday for Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Film Editing. “@kumailn does not. Last year I said he and @emilyvgordon would be nominated for Original Screenplay at the 2018 Oscars and that if I was right he had to eat a bowl of sprouts. So last night we celebrated with that classic combo: champagne and sprouts.”

Nanjiani’s response? “I’ve never been happier to lose a bet & eat a bowl of something I dislike,” wrote the comedian. “Thank you @edgarwright !”
