Reese Witherspoon’s Mrs. Whatsit wants to show you her favorite planet in the galaxy. Storm Reid goes world-hopping with her galactic tour guides in fresh new footage from Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time that debuted Sunday ahead of the Golden Globes.
In addition to glamorous, prismatic new vistas explored in the fantasy film based on Madeleine L’Engle’s beloved work, the promo sees new looks at Michael Pena (Ant-Man) as the marionette-like Red (with eyes to match), Zach Galifianakis as The Happy Medium, and the young Meg Murray (Reid) traveling across the universe to various worlds to find her missing father (Chris Pine).
If you thought Marvel’s Doctor Strange had dibs on trippy inter-dimensional jumping, then hang on to your butts because this heroine has Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey, and Mindy Kaling playing her guides through the galaxy.
“The first image [I had in my head] was to place a brown girl in that role of Meg, a girl traveling to different planets and encountering beings and situations that I’d never seen a girl of color in,” DuVernay, who directed Selma and JAY-Z’s “Family Feud” music video, explained to EW. “All of those scenes struck my fancy, and then it was also something that [Disney VP of production] Tendo Nagenda said to me, which I’ll never forget. One of the things that really made me want to read it was when he said, ‘Ava, imagine what you would do with the worlds.’ Worlds! ‘Planets no one’s ever seen or heard of,’ he said. There aren’t any other black women who have been invited to imagine what other planets in the universe might look and feel like. I was interested in that and in a heroine that looked like the girls I grew up with.”
A Wrinkle in Time, which also stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Levi Miller, tessers to theaters on March 9, 2018. Watch the new Golden Globes promo above.
