Mamma Mia! sequel wraps filming with musical trailer announcement
How can you resist a new look at Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again?
The sequel to the 2008 movie musical has officially wrapped filming, as announced by star Lily James (Disney’s Cinderella) in a behind-the-scenes video. If you enjoy seeing the likes of Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, and Dominic Cooper palling around on the idyllic set, then there’s an added bonus: the first trailer is dropping Thursday.
Based on the hit Broadway musical and featuring songs of ABBA, the first Mamma Mia! starred Seyfried as Sophie, a bride-to-be who secretly invites three men (played by Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, and Stellan Skarsgård) to her wedding in the hopes of learning which of them is her real father.Streep played Sophie’s mother, Donna, and James plays a younger version of the character in the sequel. “Of course I want to know more about Donna,” Seyfried told EW. “She’s effervescent and inspired and amazing and has such a spirit. Meryl brought such light to this character and then you see Lily playing Donna, and it’s seamless. The movie’s better than the original because there’s a depth to it that only comes from time.”
Here We Go Again, written and directed by Ol Parker (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), also touts a reunion between Streep and her Silkwood costar, Cher. Though, we’ll have to wait — perhaps for the official trailer release — to see her in character.
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is scheduled for release on July 20, 2018.
