Gary Oldman's Winston Churchill has an audience with the king in Darkest Hour clip
Sid Vicious. Beethoven. Sirius Black. Dracula. These incredible performances by Gary Oldman over the years still hasn’t prepared you for his full-bodied disappearing act as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour.
Directed by Joe Wright (Atonement), the film focuses on the prime minister’s early days in his post, during which he must grapple with the decision of negotiating with Hitler or to continue Britain’s fight despite daunting odds. He also must navigate a relationship with King George VI (Rogue One and Bloodline‘s Ben Mendelsohn).
As this clip shows, the early meetings between the king and Churchill were not exactly awkward-free affairs — though do take note at how Oldman-as-Churchill’s eyes light up at the mention of “lunch.”
Watch the clip above and see why Oldman is an early favorite for best actor. Darkest Hour is in theaters Nov 22.
