Piranha II: The Spawning

For a franchise which began as an unabashed, and lowly-budgeted, Jaws knock-off, the Piranha series has a retrospectively remarkable array of behind-the-scenes talent. The great Joe Dante (The Howling, Gremlins) directed 1978’s Piranha, which was written by the also great future filmmaker John Sayles (Matewan, Eight Men Out); it’s producers included Jon Davison, who later helped bring us both RoboCop and Starship Troopers. And the film’s sequel, Piranha II: The Spawning (a.k.a. Piranha II: Flying Killers), was directed and co-written by James Cameron, who would go on to be, well, James Cameron.

Scream Factory announced Friday that it will be debuting the Terminator and Titanic director’s first film on Blu-ray on Jan. 30. The release will be a “Collector’s Edition” featuring a new HD film transfer, presented in the proper aspect ratio, of the film’s uncut version that was seen on the previous DVD release. The edition’s extras will be announced at a later date.

You can pre-order Piranha II: The Spawning at the Scream Factory website. and you can see the cover of the Blu-ray, below.
