In the new drama Soy Nero, a California-raised Mexican teenager named Nero — played by Johnny Ortiz (McFarland, USA) — makes several attempts to cross the border back into the U.S. before finally returning to Los Angeles. He decides to enlist in the Army as a “Green Card Soldier,”, a shortcut to citizenship. Now halfway around the world, Nero guards an Iraqi border, keeping out those who pose a threat to American interests abroad.

Soy Nero is directed and co-written by Rafi Pitts. The film costars Darrell Britt-Gibson (The Wire,; Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Aml Ameen (The Maze Runner, Idris Elba’s upcoming directorial debut Yardie), Rory Cochrane (Argo), and Michael Harney (Orange is the New Black). Soy Nero is in theaters Friday.
