“We walk together and we fall together.” This is the life of John Travolta‘s John Gotti in the first Gotti trailer, which debuted Tuesday morning on Good Morning America.

The film has been in development for years with talks of the American Crime Story star in the title role buzzing about in 2011. At one point it was called Gotti: Three Generations, at another it was The Life and Death of John Gotti. Now it’s just Gotti, and Entourage star Kevin Connolly is in the director’s chair.

“New York is the greatest city in the world — my city,” Travolta declares.

Gotti examines the notoriously dapper gangster, nicknamed the Teflon Don, over the course of three decades. Kelly Preston, Travolta’s real-life wife, plays Gotti’s wife, Victoria. Chris Kerson (True Detective) plays Willie Boy Johnson (who gets got) and Spencer Lofranco (King Cobra) plays Gotti’s son, John Gotti, Jr.

“There are nice cars and fancy suits in the movie, but we’re also showing where all that eventually leads,” Connolly told EW. He also noted, “HBO made a Gotti movie in 1996, but his death, which was horrible, hasn’t been covered too much. That’s a different angle that we’re going to explore.”

Gotti was acquitted in three separate criminal trials before he was eventually convicted of murder in 1992. He died in prison at the age of 61.

The film hits theaters on Dec. 15, 2017.
