Rooney Mara is surrounded by intrigue and suspicion in the upcoming historical thriller The Secret Scripture, and EW has an exclusive look at the film’s gripping trailer.

Based on Sebastian Barry’s novel of the same name and also starring Vanessa Redgrave and Eric Bana, The Secret Scripture follows a 100-year-old Irish woman, Rose McNulty (Redgrave), who keeps a detailed diary of her life during her stay at a mental hospital. Mara plays a younger version of Rose navigating personal woes — she’s suspected of murdering her own child, of mysterious origin — during a time of political and social upheaval.

Judging by the trailer, much of the drama revolves around Rose’s various relationships: Some are romantic, some are fraught with tension, and all seem to lead to her ostracization. Speculation about her personal dealings intensifies and accusations that she killed her child begin to take a toll on her sanity, even as she denies any wrongdoing.

Director Jim Sheridan, a six-time Oscar nominee, previously helmed films including In America, In the Name of the Father, My Left Foot, and Get Rich or Die Tryin’, the semi-biographical drama about rapper 50 Cent. Though Secret Scripture was shot back in 2015, it marks Redgrave’s first major theatrical release since 2014’s Foxcatcher, and her first leading role since 2012’s Song for Marion.

The Secret Scripture opens Oct. 13 in limited release. Watch the exclusive trailer above, and check out the film’s poster below.
