The Shape of Water trailer: Guillermo del Toro's creature emerges
Meet the creature everyone is raving about
It’s not a Hellboy prequel, we promise, but the creature in The Shape of Water does look a bit like Abe from Guillermo del Toro‘s comic book movie. As a matter of fact, Abe actor Doug Jones also brings to life Sally Hawkins’ submarine sweetheart, who comes to the surface in the new, mildly red-band trailer for del Toro’s latest work.
This creature is “the most sensitive asset ever to be housed” in the Cold War-era facility where the film takes place. The government wants it for experimentation, “the Soviets want it,” but Hawkins’ mute character, Elisa, falls in love with it. When the lonely janitor helps the creature escape, Michael Shannon must “unf–k this mess.”
And to that, Elisa has just two words for the man in charge.
The new Shape of Water trailer comes as critics emerge from screenings at various film festivals with praise for this fantasy love story. EW’s Chris Nashawaty deemed it “breathtaking in its shoot-the-moon ambition.” The work won the top prize at the Venice Film Festival, an early sign of its awards potential come Oscar voting time.
Octavia Spencer, Richard Jenkins, and Michael Stuhlbarg also star in The Shape of Water, which is based on a story from del Toro that he penned in the screenplay with writer Vanessa Taylor.
The film will open in theaters on Dec. 8. Watch the new trailer above.
