Joe Alwyn cast in Joel Edgerton's gay conversion therapy film Boy Erased
The 'Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk' star joins Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, and Lucas Hedges
Joel Edgerton has recruited Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk star Joe Alwyn for his next film.
For the follow-up to his directorial debut, The Gift, Edgerton is serving as writer and director on Boy Erased, a coming-of-age and coming-out drama based on Garrard Conley’s Boy Erased: A Memoir of Identity, Faith, and Family.
The film follows Jared, the son of a Baptist pastor, who, upon being outed to his parents at 19, must decide between entering a gay conversion therapy program and being shunned by his community.
Alwyn joins cast a that includes Academy Award nominee Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea) and Academy Award winners Nicole Kidman (The Hours) and Russell Crowe (Gladiator). Cherry Jones (24) and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ bassist Flea are also onboard.
The British actor, who is currently dating Taylor Swift and is the possible key subject in her latest single, made his big screen debut in the lead role of Ang Lee’s 2016 military drama Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk. Next up for Alwyn is playing Robert Dudley alongside Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan in Mary Queen of Scots.
