Alexander Payne's Downsizing to close Fantastic Fest
The closing night film at this year’s Fantastic Fest will be director Alexander Payne’s Downsizing, it was announced Tuesday. The movie stars Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig, and Laura Dern and is set in a world where scientists shrink humans to pocket size as part of a master plan to minimize all of mankind over the course of 300 years. “Downsizing imagines what might happen if overpopulation and climate change [prompt] Norwegian scientists to discover how to shrink people down to five inches tall and propose, very earnestly, the population’s two-to-three-hundred-year transition from big to small,” Payne told EW earlier this year.
Other additions to the Fantastic Fest schedule revealed as part of the festival’s final wave of programming announcement include the Luke Evans-starring Professor Marston & the Wonder Women, the Frank Grillo-led getaway drama Wheelman, the horror film Applecart — which reunites You’re Next cast members Barbara Crampton and AJ Bowen — and the documentary Haunters: The Art of the Scare, about the creators of Halloween haunted houses. It was also announced that both Grillo and Crampton will be among this year’s guests.
Fantastic Fest takes place at Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, Texas, from Sept. 21-28. Learn more about Fantastic Fest at the event’s official website.
