A Bad Moms Christmas directors tease 'explosive' sequel

The women of Bad Moms are getting ready to have themselves a merry little Christmas. Okay, maybe “merry” is too strong — “terribly frustrating” might be a better choice, judging by the looks on their faces in new character posters from the upcoming A Bad Moms Christmas, premiering exclusively here.
In these posters, the titular moms pose with their own mothers: Christine Baranski plays mom to Mila Kunis, Cheryl Hines is Kristen Bell’s, and Susan Sarandon is paired with Kathryn Hahn.
“It was really fun thinking about who their moms might have been and then it was super fun casting what I think are three of the best comedic actresses around to be in the movie,” Jon Lucas, who co-wrote and directed the movie and its 2016 predecessor with Scott Moore, tells EW. “Hopefully every woman will recognize elements of their mom in all three of them.”
While Baranski plays a perfectionist with high standards, Hines’ character is a cuddly, overbearing parent. Sarandon, though, is like her wild daughter — and, evidently, a lover of leather and forties. But no matter how different they are, they’ll likely have one thing in common come December: Christmas-induced stress.
Moore and Lucas came up with the idea of doing a Christmas-themed sequel after realizing how much work their own wives do during the holidays. “They should get paid,” Lucas says. “Christmas is like the Super Bowl for moms, and it felt like the biggest, juiciest, most stressful time of year.”
“It’s the time of year that families come together,” Moore continues, “so people are having fun and celebrating, but it’s also a very emotionally charged time because you’re dealing with people that you don’t see for the rest of the year. It’s a very complicated, dramatic, funny, emotional, time.” Adds Lucas, laughing: “No matter how much eggnog you drink, it’s always going to be a bit of a tinderbox.”
And the main characters don’t exactly help extinguish any emotional fires. “The women definitely go wild in this one as much as they did in the first one, if not more,” Lucas teases. “I think actually what was really fun about this movie is the relationship between our bad moms and their moms,” Moore says. “I think that’s where the movie really gets explosive and fun and a little emotional and surprising.”
