'The Hitman's Bodyguard' topped the box office again, while the Mayweather-McGregor fight actually hit the top-10
Summer box office totals continue to flounder, with this weekend’s overall tally coming in as the worst in at least three years.
Lionsgate’s The Hitman’s Bodyguard led all films for the second weekend in a row with just over $10 million in ticket sales. Down 53 percent from its debut frame, the Ryan Reynolds-Samuel L. Jackson action comedy has grossed $36.9 million so far.
In second place, Warner Bros. Annabelle: Creation continued to perform, with $7.3 million in estimated ticket sales. Its three-week tally now stands at $77.8 million.
The weekend’s biggest newcomer was The Weinstein Company’s Leap!, an animated adventure that pulled down an estimated $5 million. The Weinstein Company also nabbed the fourth position on the chart, with Tyler Sheridan’s Wind River expanding to nationwide theaters. The thriller, starring Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen, grossed an estimated $4.4 million.
In fifth place, Steven Soderbergh’s Logan Lucky (released theatrically by Bleecker Street) earned $4.3 million, a dip of 42 percent from its debut last week. The heist comedy has now made $15 million after two weeks.
The only other newcomer beside Leap! in the top-10 is OTL’s Birth of the Dragon, which grossed $2.5 million in eighth place.
Overall, the box office will hit about $65 million this weekend, making it at least the lowest since Sept. 5, 2014, when Guardians of the Galaxy topped the competition with $10.3 million in ticket sales. Depending on how the final numbers shake out, this weekend has the potential to be the worst overall since Sept. 21, 2001, when ticket sales dipped to $59 million in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
The summer box office has been trending down for weeks — this will be the first year since 2006 that the overall total fails to top $4 billion — and the catastrophic weather in Texas due to Hurricane Harvey mixed with Saturday night’s Floyd Mayweather-Connor McGregor fight, which Mayweather won, could have factored into this weekend’s poor returns. Not that the Mayweather-McGregor fight didn’t help the box office too: Fathom Events screened the bout in 481 theaters nationwide and the event landed in ninth place at the box office with $2.4 million in ticket sales.
