J.K. Rowling visits the Fantastic Beasts sequel set
We may not know where to find any fantastic beasts, but we know where to find one fantastic author.
J.K. Rowling posted a photo Friday from the set of the upcoming sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The photo itself is pretty much spoiler-free, showing only Rowling’s chair on set, but the little critter next to her name looks a lot like a griffin — a mythical creature that’s name-dropped in the original Fantastic Beasts book. Might we see one in the sequel?
Production on the sequel began earlier this summer, and the plot, written by Rowling herself, will follow magizoologist Newt Scamander (a returning Eddie Redmayne) and young Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) as they team up to take on the notorious dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp). Original Fantastic Beasts cast members Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler, and Ezra Miller are also set to return, along with director David Yates. Joining the cast are Callum Turner as Newt’s war hero brother Theseus and Zoë Kravitz as Newt’s one-time friend Leta Lestrange. (Kravitz’s character was seen in a photograph in the original movie.)
The first Fantastic Beasts film, which earned more than $814 million worldwide, was set in 1920s New York, but the as-yet-untitled sequel will move the action to London and Paris. It’s set to hit theaters on Nov. 16, 2018.
